How to Generate AI Images in Windows 11 Paint (Cocreator)

In the 2023 Windows 11 update (not the 23H2 one), Microsoft is adding some nifty AI features to many of its apps. The star of the show is the new AI Copilot, designed to work seamlessly with Windows 11. Recently, Paint got an upgrade with a handy background removal tool, and now, Microsoft is rolling out a feature in Paint that lets you create AI-powered images.

They’re calling it “Cocreator,” and it runs on OpenAI’s DALL-E model. With this addition and some cool layer support, Paint has become quite the feature-packed tool. If you’re curious about trying out the Cocreator feature to make AI images in Paint, check out this guide.

What Is Paint Cocreator?

Paint Cocreator is this neat tool tucked into the Microsoft Paint app. It’s all about making different versions of images using DALL-E. And here’s the cool part – it gives you a bunch of styles to play with, so you can whip up images that fit a specific theme you have in mind.

How to Use the Paint Cocreator Feature

If you’re itching to give the Paint Cocreator feature a spin, here’s the lowdown. Right now, it’s in the experimental phase, and it’s exclusively for Windows Insiders. So, if your PC is enrolled in the Canary, Dev, or Beta channel of the Windows Insider program, you’re in luck. Release Preview Insider people, though, you’ll have to sit tight a bit longer.

To kick things off, make sure your Windows Insider PC is updated to the latest build. Then, swing by the Microsoft Store to check if the Paint app needs an update. The version number you’re looking for is 11.2309.20.0 or higher, so get it updated.

Here’s a pro tip: If you want another way, you can use UUP Dump to snag Windows Insider builds without officially signing up. Just make sure you’re logged into your Microsoft account on your Windows 11 PC; otherwise, you’ll miss out on joining the waitlist for this cool feature.

Now, fire up the Paint app. Spot the Cocreator feature icon. Click on it, and a whole new side pane unfolds. Hit the “Join waitlist” button, and keep an eye on your email. Microsoft will drop you a note in your official account about unlocking access to this awesome feature.

Ready for the creative journey? Here’s your step-by-step guide to diving into the Paint Cocreator feature:

Is Paint Cocreator Any Good?

It generates three images per prompt, which is a neat feature and integrating predefined styles into the prompt is a smart move for getting the right image. However, it’s worth noting that fetching the images takes a bit of time.

Now, the saving grace is the save feature which allows you to keep any of those generated images in high resolution. But, there’s a resolution cap at 1024 x 1024 pixels.

In the experimental phase, you’re granted 50 credits to test the waters with this feature but once those credits run out, you can still use the Copilot to generate images using the Bing Image Creator.

Wrapping up

So, that wraps up the lowdown on creating AI images in the Windows 11 Paint app. The 2023 update has a bunch of cool features, and the revamped Snipping Tool is especially exciting. Give Cocreator a spin on your Windows 11 PC and drop us a line about how it is going for you. Can’t wait to hear what you think!
